I can't tell you from doing it, but I can say that everyone I talked to about doing just that told me it was a bad idea. Particularly getting around the tip of Louisiana. If you check the charts closely, you're dealing with a lot of shallow water and a plethora of oil rigs. Also, if a North'r blows through, there really isn't any place to duck into. Doesn't mean you can't do it, but I decided against it.
If crossing the Gulf is out, you might consider going from Galveston to the Calcaseiu River to the ICW. That puts you on at about the 240 WHL mile marker.
