Louisiana Coastal Cruising

I'm going to sail from Galveston Bay to SW Florida in January and am looking for cruisers who have sailed outside around Louisiana since Katrina/Rita.

We came up via the ICW but are considering options for the return to SW Florida. We do not want to sail straight across and prefer to coastal cruise.

Anybody sail outside??

I can't tell you from doing it, but I can say that everyone I talked to about doing just that told me it was a bad idea. Particularly getting around the tip of Louisiana. If you check the charts closely, you're dealing with a lot of shallow water and a plethora of oil rigs. Also, if a North'r blows through, there really isn't any place to duck into. Doesn't mean you can't do it, but I decided against it.

If crossing the Gulf is out, you might consider going from Galveston to the Calcaseiu River to the ICW. That puts you on at about the 240 WHL mile marker.

Good luck, however you go,
