Forecasting onshore winds

The Texas coast, being relatively flat and featureless, and under the influence of a resident high usually during the warmer weather periods of the year, does any one have an algorythm or a rule of thumb to use for estimating onshore wind strength basically based on the difference between land and water temperature. Any opinions or information would be greatly appreciated from the gang.
