live aboard and sailing

How much sailing do folks do whilst living aboard their sailboats? As we were visiting St.Thomas doing the landlubber tourist thing, we wondered how much sailing one does after settling in on a liveaboard?

There are liveaboard cruisers and live-aboards that rarely leave the dock or mooring. Typically, the latter have full time jobs and cruise only on weekends or holidays if that. When you get ready to cruise...you have to stow away a lot of stuff that you leave out while sitting somewhere for a while and it is a pain to put it all ship shape for day sails so there is a major incentive to sit somewhere unless you have a new destination in mind. Everyone is different but even most cruisers are probably sitting somewhere enjoying the local scene 70% or more of the time. The nice thing is that you CAN move whenever you want!

Depends on the size of the boat and the willingness of the owner to move it. Smaller boats are often sailed more than larger ones from what I've seen. Some liveaboards use the boat as a floating house...and treat it as such... others see it as a home they can sail away in... and do just that...
