routes to Panama through the Caribbean

Is there a recommended route or preferred time of the year to head for Panama from the NE Caribbean area ? In watching the noaa sites the winds and water in the counter clockwise direction look better than the clockwise route. Crossing the center doesn't look very nice either. Are there other considerations that I should ponder ? Not going soon just thinking ahead.
