Sunsail

Anyone have any experience chartering with Sunsail? Out of Guadeloupe?

Popye...we used them in the BVI's some time ago without problems. They are now part of the Moorings group and you are pretty much guaranteed a good boat and charter. Guadeloupe is wonderful...be sure to visit the Saints!

We used them for a charter in the BVI last year. A great experience all around.

I used them this year from Antigua, but stopped in their Guadeloupe base (had to do clearance anyway). They happily helped me with weather forecast, helped me with some questions (bridge openings, ...), gave me free water ..... Most of their boats were out, and I think they have more cats than monos there. My experience with Sunsail is good. They usually exceeded expactations. Except once in Palma - Mediterranean. The boat was not as clean as I am used to and some of the base staff were lazy.
All other locations were good. Antigua best.

P.S. I own a boat with them so I might be biased, but I like what I see.
Boats are max 5.5 years old in any case (then the must go out of charter), most are much junger.

I was trying to use them for my planned Charter of a 38 Lagoon this May in the BVI ... From their website I asked them several to call me (I had so many questions) but for whatever reason they only emailed back with some response that seemed more or less pre-fabricated. So I passed doing business with them and found a smaller charterer how was willing to call me back ...so far I an happy and look forward to a nice week of sailing ...
In about 8 weeks I will know whether it was a good decission ...

You mentioned Sunsail is now part of the Moorings group. This is really a technical point of no real importance to us cruisers, but it is my understanding that it is actually the OTHER way round. Didn't the parent company of Sunsail buy Moorings? That would make Moorings part of the Sunsail group....

Part of the restructuring of the business included closing some smaller bases, like the Sunsail base in Vancouver. This was a big shock to the manager of the Sunsail operation in Vancouver, who has poured his soul into it and whom I know personally.

This is the part I hate about Sunsail. When I entered the program I had several of their based a car drive away from me and my boat in Adriatic (less wear and tear and less sunand salt, cold water. Not to mention short season). They closed in one and a half year:
- Pula base (2-3 hours with a car from my home)
- Corsica - I really wantet to go there
- Cote de azur - I could drive there in one day, now no base is in France
- They also closed Cuba, where I wanted to go sometime (not being American have some benefits)
- They moved my boat from Adria to Antigua...
They will consolidate more bases. This works super for them, but gives us less choice.
So - why the hell do I still like them?? I should rethink....
Perhaps because I sail more now than I did ever before and that is good.
And I sail in locations I could not sail otherwise. Just hope thay do not close them all and leave one mega base.

Yes, I did a bareboat last June with Sunsail Guadeloupe - 10 days Jeanneau 40. My 3rd charter in a row (different bases) with Sunsail........4th coming up.
