Sayulita, MX

Well, instead of just goofing around all the time, I thought I would try to provide some useful information. The admiral and I just got back from a week long, land based trip to Sayulita, MX. Sayulita is about 45 minutes North of Puerto Vallarta, up HWY 200, on the Pacific. We basically went to relax and surf, but in the back of my mind I was thinking about a stop for our future expeditions on our boat.
Sayulita is a little fishing town that is fast growing and being populated by expatriates. There are lots of houses to rent and really great restaurants, with everything from corner taco stands to the overpriced magazine write ups. But no matter where we ate, all the food was good, especially the fish.
Our goal in the future is to sail and surf. Sayulita and the surrounding area has a lot to offer. Puerto Vallarta obviously has all the accomodations, including marinas now, but if all you need is food and water, Sayulita will do fine. Given that it is a fishing town, the boats go out in the morning and come back in the evening with fresh fish. There is a good spot to anchor on the south end of the cove near the point and you are right next to the fishing boat path. There was a trimaran anchored there the whole week. You could flag down a boat and buy fresh fish, if you were too lazy to catch your own.
Just south of Sayulita is Punta Mita. There are moorings there, but I don't know about their availability. Punta Mita is a little more upscale than Sayulita and has a gas station with diesel. Neither town has a bank. There are several banks with ATMs located down HWY 200 about 20 minutes. There are buses that run up and down HWY 200.
Punta Mita and Sayulita both offer excellent surf. Sayulita is more for beginners. I am not sure about Punta Mita, but Sayulita offers the opportunity to anchor and paddle over to the break.

Here is Sayulita's break (me on the right)

Here is the main part of Sayulita from Villa Amor on the point(great hotel)

One more thing, stay away during Easter and Christmas. Sayulita is a hot spot for "Mexican Holiday" as they call it. It was very crowded on the main beach, and extremely loud. They love their disco. The main beach in this photo was packed.
