Belize Southern Cayes

Hi all,

We will be chartering a cat out of Placencia this summer. We will have a week. Any suggestions for an itinerary or must not miss or do miss Cayes?

Thanks,
Allan

Thumbs up Pick up a copy of Capt. Freya Rauscher guide

"Cruising Guide to Belize and Mexico's Caribbean Coast, Including Guatemala's Rio Dulce (Paperback)" NB***** 2007 - new edition

its available even though Amazon does not have it. It might be overkill but I believe in supporting these guide writers, few of them get rich.

The real problem with chartering in Belize is that you can't go to the outer atolls (unless they have changed the rules). Lighthouse Reef is a gem.

The inner reefs are somewhat over fished and storm damaged but there are a few nice areas.

Check out Caye Caulker, Drowned Cays, Tobacco Cay, to name a few.

Don't be scared to anchor of Belize City and dinghy up the river, under the swing bridge. Tie up at Marvin's Marlin (Sp?) restaurant, local haunt with great lobster stew.

Ranguana Cay was my favorite..great place to spend the whole day......snorkeling, fishing, general limin'.......especially if you get the caretakers to cook you a dinner - Coconut Shrimp was amazing. Also liked being down south behind the reef near Nicholas Cay..........double bow anchors, wind howling and water flowing thru the cut. Also great sky/star gazing.......as it's so dark at night.

The restaurants / bars on the beach in Placencia are fun.......especially as you walk down Main Street (thin concrete sidewalk in the sand)) to get there.

Just be ready for an under-developed natural beauty experience.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've spent lots of time in Belize. I have spent a month there several times and many shorter trips. I'll be in Belize next week for 10 days followed by six weeks starting in mid-April. Most of my time has been in the jungle with only short "vacations" by the sea and on the Cayes. This will be my first time on the water there. I much prefer the uninhabited places and look forward to the snorkeling.

Then You are already very familiar with the country.......great.

Some people are expecting BVI type scene, so try to gently warn them of a very different of adveture.

Next time I visit I'll include the jungle/inland stuff.
Have a great trip
