Cruising the Big Island

Sailing around the big island of Hawaii last Friday, we found a volcano!

Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii, running into the ocean.

basically, the hawaiian islands are all volcanically formed...so finding a volcano there isn't all that surprising.

The guys who found a new volcanic island in the middle of the ocean were much more surprised.

While the photo doesn't really have anything in it to give scale...I'm hoping bob was using some big glass and kept his distance... lava and boats don't mix well.

We were pretty far away (12x zoom on the camera). Even so, it was very impressive. I was surprised the lava shoots up like that where it flows into the ocean. The eruption itself is a few miles up the hill. They have been evacuating some people today and yesterday.
