Visiting Maine soon?

If you're in your first year of ownership of your boat you might want to revisit the idea on visiting Maine this summer. The below link and the embedded link within the blog to the NY Sun article will be of interest to you.

Maybe the idea is to keep people out of the state until they've had more than a year to learn how to drive the damn thing, boat or plane... Either way, it seems a little odd that a state that thrives on tourism would go around taxing tourists without explanation. Of course, I lived there for 17 years and I still haven't figured out why they do things the way they do.

After a long history of sticking it to the locals for the benefit of tourists it appears we are now sticking it anywhere we can.

The state sales tax or personal property tax has been an issue in various New England states for a while. On sales tax, if you bring a vessel into Ct, Mass, Maine (or NY, I think) within the first year of ownership and spend more than 30 days or 180 days or are there on 1 January - depends on the state - and you can't demonstrate you have paid sales tax to another state, you will be assessed sales tax at that states rate. Additionally, we had an instance in our second year of ownership of the town of Vineyard Haven Ma attempting to collect state personal property tax on our boat based upon evidence that a local shipyard had done work on the vessel. It took several letters, but that issue went away as we hadn't been in their harbor for more than 60 days. States want money.
