Yes, hot springs are further north, - it's another 40+ miles outside jaunt to Tofino, from there you're inside again for a bit, including, I believe, Hot Springs cove.

IIRC Google Earth has pretty limited coverage in this area, but it may be getting better.

Swimming in Barkley

We were in Barkley in the middle of August and had nice swimming at Lucky creek. We anchored just to the East of Refuge Island (49 01.55, 125 18.675). The temperature of the salt water was an honest 70 degrees. My wife (who does not like cold water) actually went swimming, while I spent about an hour scrubbing the bottom of the boat. There was a thermocline at about six feet, so cleaning the bottom of the keel was chilly.

As for Lucky Creek itself, the water was a little colder, probably 66 to 68 degrees, but very fun due to the waterfalls and deep pools.

Our weather in August was pretty good. Two days of rain, out of 11 we were actually in Barkley, a little fog, but generally quite a bit of sun. A lot of the locals in Uclulet were sporting fresh sunburns the day we were there.

The best thing is the seafood. We caught 4 salmon under sail, all about 2-3 miles outside, plus buckets of oysters and steamer clams. Got a few crab in Uclulet. Didn't do well with the shrimping, though other people we knew did.

Good Luck

Tom

You can go inside from Tofino, by going around Flores Island. The short route is to go outside.
