Somali Pirates

Here's a link to yet another article concerning the pirate infested waters in the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Somalia:

washingtonpost.com

As printed in today's paper, there is a photo of the boat belonging to the recently abducted French couple. On my computer, that photo doesn't seem to show up in the on-line version. It's a 53' Amel Super Maramu.

It strikes me that recommissioning one of the old WWII battleships and having it stand offshore one of the pirate dens loosing off a trio of 18 inch shells on an irregular basis might give great practice to the crew and a lesson in diplomacy to the G_D pirates.

I agree with you, just blow them out of the water no questions asked. They were 16 inch shells.:)

actually, a vessel with attack helicopters aboard would be a lot more effective than a WWII battleship. they could respond to threats a lot faster.

Nah. Use a point defense. More effective. Install a 50 Cal on each foredeck. Boat/US could rent them like EPIRBs due to the high initial cost.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Personally, I think a Phalanx like radar controlled gatling gun would be nice. :) Or maybe just a gatling gun... doesn't have to be all that high a caliber... say .40 cal or so.

It does look as if we might be getting some protection at long last, see

That would work as long as it doesn't become another Black Hawk Down situation. I tend to like that battleship idea myself, but any of these ideas are pretty expensive to maintain.

This sounds like a perfect U.N. project, since all nations shipping in that area could be tragets.

I think a few destroyers with heavy gatling gun systems would be better and lower maintenance, but not as able to get to the scene as quickly. Q-ships are still the best idea IMHO,

Noonsite have a report on the pirates using the captured yacht as a decoy.

Check out the likely armaments carried by the pirates.

Hmmm......maybe shooting a flare gun at them was not such a good idea.......(I remember that from another one of those interminably boring 'should we carry shooters" threads.
