The fee isn't for all boats... it is for boats homeported or berthed there... basically, the harbor master does a swing through the different marinas, and any boats that are there for a certain number of days need to have a permit or tag. Doesn't apply to transients.

Up here in Michigan, they started requireing permits to use the parks, people complained because parks here are supposed to be tax supported, state got around that by turning it into a parking fee instead, then put up no parking signs on all the roads around the parks.

If they provide some benefit, I don't have a problem with stickers or fees, but here there realy isn't any advantage.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I'm all for ticketing people that do NOT comply with the law. Here are some boats that I feel are well past due in getting tickets...just a few on my dock, but I'm sure there are many more within the marina:

By the way, the last picture was of the city tug. This being a municipal marina, you'd think the city could at least obey California state laws. This might explain why 2/3 of the boats in the Vallejo Municipal Marina have expired registration.

So, NO, I don't see anything wrong with ticketing people that don't obey the law.

ckgreenman,

If my understanding of CA law is correct, you don't need to register the boat if it has no motor. If it does have a motor, you could file for a "non-op" permit and avoid the registration fees for that period. If you're way over in North Carolina, you should think about changing the state registration on that....um....mega-yacht?

lol ya I know. the only reason I even had a reg on it was because we had a 2 HP tohatsu on it occasionally. Actually I talked to CA DMV and they don't even have record of the CF number. As in CA, I only need to reg/title it if I plan to put a motor on it. Otherwise anything under 14ft LWL doesn't need to be registered.
