Here is one for you. What next. There is town in MA that requires a permit to go boating.

It is nothing new you have needed a permit on Lake George Ny for as long as i can remenber

And many towns on Long Island are resident ONLY for long term docks

If a dirty bottom slows you down what do you think it does to your boat

Fairhaven does much the same. They have a waterways use sticker that you need to get annually. You can only get it if you've paid the excise tax on your boat...so it ensures that you've paid both..

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Actually It would be nice if ALL boating areas required it and one of the prerequisites to get one (AND be able to register a boat) is DEMONSTRATED boating knowledge and skill.

Gee is it me or does that sound like a familiar process for some other vehicle? hmm....

Stepping down from the soap box now.

Actually it is a permit to berth your vessel in the harbor. It is very common in MA. Many view it as a tax disguised as a fee, but the better towns designate the revenues for the harbor, not the general coffers. If it pays for harbor patrol operations, town landing maintenance, and pump out facilities, I'm OK with it.

Hazmat's right... Fairhaven has a pumpout boat that will come to your marina and pump out your holding tank for FREE... makes the small fee for the permit worth it IMHO.

Nice For stuff like that you don't mind paying a little extra. I

t's like the county we live in provides free use of the county "convenience center" (aka trash drop off location" for County residents. We pay a little bit more in taxes but as a result my wife and I don't pay extra for trash service.

I'd rather pay the small fee for the sticker, which costs me far less than most people pay for using pumpout stations over the course of a season., than have no fee and have to hunt down pumpout stations each time I get back to the dock.

if it's open to the Atlantic, I don't see how they can realy enforce it, unless they limit enforcement to massachusettes registered boats

Up here in Michigan, they started requireing permits to use the parks, people complained because parks here are supposed to be tax supported, state got around that by turning it into a parking fee instead, then put up no parking signs on all the roads around the parks.

If they provide some benefit, I don't have a problem with stickers or fees, but here there realy isn't any advantage.

Ken.
