I'd suggest you read the back copies of the "Changes in Latitudes" sections of Latitude 38. They are online at

If you are clever with Google, you can also search these archives by key words.
An example of such a trip is documented in these letters. I believe a couple in Seattle fixed up a Cal 34 and did the trip you describe.
