Techno Disaster

I really do not post anything to the forums and only reply from my own experience, but, the one thing I have noticed over the past few years is that everyone is becoming the typical over technologically spoiled humans that big business is intending for us to be. Bigger, better, faster, easier to use, less time consuming, etc., etc.

I have a concern that we will all forget how to navigate, sail, find food in the ocean and not slow down to enjoy life and all its wonders.

I challange each and everyone to use 1 day a week, just to explore your own abilities and thoughts and turn off the tech. This will prepare you for the bumps in life we all will have.

Ok, I off my pedestal.

If you're interested in smaller boats and simpler boats, you might find Sailfar.net more to your liking.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

if i turn off the tech, how can i get my daily dose of sailnet?!?!

i would be leary of overestimating the average sailnet members reliance, or what you seem to think is over-reliance, on tech. by and by i bet most can sail by DR/can take a sight, 'catch food', and generally be a good salt to have around if things got dicey...

ie....

or

though, it is tough to shoot deer on the water....

Yeah, when they're in the water a head shot's your only option -- and then you've got to recover em quick or they'll sink on ya

Balance?

So, in September, hubby and daughter went to Astoria, OR to take boat to Westport, WA. He had bought a little gps thingy that plugs into the laptop, but it wouldn't work (after hours at Englund Marine). Finally he said, lets just go.

And go they did. After all, he fished for 15 years off the coast of Southeast, AK without a GPS.

So away they went, and all was well.

I say, it's a good thing he is old and navigates just fine by DR lol!

And, as far as the other point goes, we never run out of fish. Salmon, halibut, smoked, frozen, canned. Whatever.

Just because you LIKE tech doesn't mean you can't live without it. It is just fun, you know. Can't we have a balance?

Well Dog, All I can say is apparently you did not read the post. I was just stating concern that too many rely on electronic devices and should keep the practicing the basics , If you are out in the ocean can you find your way home without your GPS and other electronics. There are some that can not. That is the root of the problem. You see, I can.

'must be pretty subjective means to come up with this "too many" unless you're saying any is too many. There are many of us that are older and made many passages before GPS, but then those RDFs and LORAN's were electronic too. I started with a sextant, but I'd have some relearning to do if I needed to rely on it. I love my GPS, but I still know that a vision of the real world trumps the electronic screen. I think someone, a few hundred years back, thought too many sailors were depending on the magnitized needle to find their way. Take care and joy, Aythya crew
