I will be sailing from Cape May to Martha''s Vineyard this summer. Has anyone done this. any ideas?

Done Ocean City NJ to MV a few years ago and am about to set off again. When are you departing? Its an easy sail, usually catch fish while underway. Just look for a 2 day weather window. Radar, autopilot are your best friends. Joe

Leaving next week. What kind of fish/bait/rig? We went to Block last year, I installed a radar and it was a lot of fun

I don''t use bait, too much ag. I use a feather on a wire leader. Sometimes I use a handline, sometimes I use a rod and reel. Feathers come in various colors, and various size hooks. If you hit a bait/tackle shop, they can help you. If you are leaving from cape may, hit tony''s at the foot of the bridge as you enter town. With this current weather window, was tempted to take off today, but not quite ready. Possibly a week or so.

Hi ..

I read your posts regarding NJ > MV.. I am planning to go from Longport NJ to Newport around 1st week in Aug. I have never done this.

As a matter of fact, My boating experience has all been in Chesepeake Bay until this year. (I Am really enjoying ocean sailing!) The trip from Maryland to the NJ coast was a blast as well.. down Delaware Bay through Cape May to Longport..

I have full compliment of radarcharplotter/autopilot/instruments and back up systems as well.

I heard that at this time, It would be real hard to reserve a slip at Block Island for the first stop as they get booked way out in advance??

Any tips on the journey to New England area on the outside would be appreciated!.. (also.. How far off shore does one do this type of trip)

Do you need a slip. There are moorings that are available to transients. you might need to get in around 10-11 am to find one and weekends are tough.

What about anchoring? I have been there a few times and I have anchored out every time. Never had a problem Block Island is nice and worth the stop.

There are so many places, I couldn''t list them...here are a few close to Block Island

I think Mystic is pretty cool. its got a maritime museum, etc. I like Newport also. A bit pricey, but worth a few days, etc

Andy: from the GE bell its about 210 nm at a heading of 065M. Don''t know how large your boat or what type of crew, if any. I am trying to depart within the next ten days. Pick a weather window or go thru Long Island Sound and duck where you need to. I originally planned to do the sound but am out of time. You will be in the shipping lanes out of New York and Buzzards Bay. It is a great trip, usually lots of sea life. I guess you keep your boat in Seaview harbor?
