Insurance Required?

I read an article last weekend in Cruising magazine, about the cost of cruising. One person interviewed for the article mentioned that insurance is now being required in order to stay at marinas, and/or receive cruising permits in some areas?

Is this true? Liability coverage is one thing, but full coverage might affect some cruising budgets out there.

Some countries, Mexico for one, require foreign yachts to carry liability insurance. This protects local marinas and boats should you go bumping around into things and isn''t all that expensive, usually about $200 - $300 per year from local carriers and perhaps less on your own policy. It is an additional cost, but may make life a little easier if local marinas don''t have to worry about you skipping town should you cause any damage.
