Brazil Import Tax on Yachts

Hi,

I''m sailing my 34 footer across the Atlantic from the Canaries to either the Caribbean or Brazil in November. I''d prefer Brazil, but...I''d like to know if anyone has info on the import tax situation there. I read on Noonsite.com that upon reaching a 180 day limit, the boat is subject to 100% import duty. I plan to lay the boat up for 10 months and only "operate" it about 3 months in the country. Can I get around the duty by having it "sealed" by customs the way I''ve done in Europe for many years???

Fred, see my reply to your post on the SSCA BB. Brazil, at least right now, seems to me an "iffy" place to leave a boat, long term and unattended...and that''s assuming you can work out putting the boat in bond inexpensively and storing it with substantial security.
