Maximum draft

What would be the maximum draft you would buy to cruise the Caribbean islands and why? I know a lot recommend a shoal draft but if you have a good dingy you could anchor further out and dingy in to explore coves, etc... Just wondering.

Re: Maximum draft

We've sailed from St Maarten to Grenada on a boat that drew 7 feet without issue.. we did have to pay a little more attention in areas like the Tobago cays and Barbuda, but generally anchored in 4-6 meters (12- 20 feet) most places. Beach access by dinghy was only an issue on Saba due to lack of shelter and a running swell.

Other than anchorages you're usually in pretty deep water...

Re: Maximum draft

One of my favorite mega-yachts, which I saw on the dock in Nantucket years ago, cruises the Caribbean every winter. I dare say she draws 12 or more feet.

Timoneer. Beauty. I don't know these folks, but she was a stunner at the boat basin. Funny enough, I said to my wife at the dock, "she is going to have her own website". I goggled it on my phone standing there. Sure enough.

sy Timoneer: Welcome

Re: Maximum draft

I'm cruising the Caribbean with 8 1/2 feet draft. Apart from being a bit more careful when approaching land and having to anchor way outside at Anegada I prefer the advantages of a deep draft and feel that the tradeoff is worth it.
