Cyclades Mediterranean Sailing
Have a sail planned with 6 Bavaria 51 chartered in Syros from Aegeus Yacht Charters, Sept 11-18, 2004. Taking lots of friends to bareboat. Please share any experience you may have in this area.
Still a few openings if you want to join us. $950 per person 7 days. Many airline folks and friends. We do this annually, but have not sailed the Cyclades yet. Linda

Cyclades Mediterranean Sailing
Buy the Rod Heinkel (sp)"Greek Water Pilot"
It is worth every penny and you can record your own experiences in the book to remember your trip. It is like having all the current local knowledge the professionals have. Made my trip an easy fun and safe.

Cyclades Mediterranean Sailing
You''re in for a treat!

Just got back from a 2-week cruise in the Cyclades starting and ending in Alimos.

Places not to miss:

Great beaches/anchorages in calm weather:

KEA: Ormos Kavia--wonderful beaches seperated by rock formations with small caves

KITHNOS: Ormos Ayios Stefanos/Ioannis--beautiful tiny anchorages where you can throw a stern anchor out and spend the day (and night if settled weather) swimming underneath cliffs with goats romping around. Could have spent a couple of days there with all the natural beauty and a couple of very friendly (if not Michelin-rated) tavernas in Stefanos.

RINIA: South Bay or Ormos Shikino (South side), depending on wind direction)--again beautiful beaches and swimming with interesting rock formations. Would have loved to spend more time there, but the wind shifted back to the north, and so we were exposed to 20+ knots of gust.

IOS: Ormos Milopotamou--fun beach with lots of activity; you can rent a windsurfer there, too!

POLIAGOS--Any of the anchorages on the south side--we didn''t get to spend time there due to the meltemi, but boy did we wish we could--we sailed right on by with our mouths drooling at the pristine, tiny beaches headed by huge cliffs-the tiny bays seemed to only accomodate 1 or 2 yachts.

IOS--We actually really enjoyed the harbour town. There were a lot less tourists in jUly than we would have expected. The only downside is that when the ferries come in, the sheer numbers of people coming on and off make you claustrophobic, and the drunk kids who have been up all night and are now awaiting the arrival of the 6:30am ferry can wake you up if you''re very close to the ferry dock.

MILOS--Main harbor is very loud due to discos and tavernas, but is very pleasant and 2 min walk to bus stand or taxis to Plaka and the great beaches of Milos.

SIFNOS--Ormos Kamares is a quaint little harbour town with lots of sights to see nearby. We took taxis to the Chora on the other side of the island--very much worth the trip!

SIROS--Ermoupolis has a sophistication and more modern European charm that we did not find elsewhere. We really enjoyed staying on the dock there--it was uncrowded and pleasant despite the arrival of the Olympic torch that night! Water was the cheapest of all ports--2 or 3 Euros for a token that allowed unlimited access to the spigot!

MIKONOS--the main dock there leaves much to be desired--very desolate, industrial, and removed from the main part of the island. Hailing a cab (or catching the bus to town) involves eitehr blind luck, the arrival of a cruise ship, or walking about a mile to a nearby taverna and calling from the payphone (there is also a bus stop next to the taverna--busses arrive hourly).
