Track to Hank

Hey all!
I'm in the process of converting my SJ24 from a slick racin boat to a rad little cruising gunkholer. When I bought her she came with a pretty awesome sail locker (Dacron 150 & 160, Mylar 210, kite), but they're all--save the kite--track sails which I'm not a fan of while single-handing.

My question: Is it worth bringing them to a sailmaker and having them converted to hanks, or should I sell them and buy some hanked headsails?

It will be a LOT more expensive to buy new sails than it will be to convert to hanks. You could even do it yourself for even less. Get a grommet tool and grommets from any supplier (sailrite is a good source) and hammer on hanks and presto, you're all set.

Sailrite even has a video that shows you how to do it.

If money is an issue then a furler will be unlikely... if you do go to a furler keep in mind most of those sails will likely need recutting because you'll lose some luff-length due to the height of the drum, and the need for room for the swivel on the foil. (still cheaper than selling and buying, though - unless the sails are due replacement anyway in which case it may be not worth putting any more money into them.)

Without a furler, luff-tape headsails are definitely a pain for singlehanded sailing. Genie's idea of adding your own hanks makes good sense.

Hello, I have a set of spectra racing sails built for a foil which I converted just by installing grommets and hanks myself. I have used them for many years with no problem apart from the brass grommets eventually corroding , especially the lower ones that get wet with salt water. Stainless ones like a sailmaker uses would be better but it´s not a major problem. Best way is to use an extra piece of sailcloth at each grommet but again not really important. Common sense gives the right sizes, I prefer a slightly smaller hank than the usual size. Better than hanks , use wichard hooks, hard to find with the correct fitting , means you can attach and remove them with one hand.

I dream about changing my hanks to wichard hooks. However, if the OP is doing 2-3 sails, that would add a lot to the cost (at least in my pocket book it would).

I had wichard hooks put on the tack and head of our headsail (we remove it from the furler between trips)... about $40 each, IIRC.

Hello, The cost of bronze wichard hooks is almost the same as the piston hanks of comparable size. I just bought some to fit to my working jib in Gibraltar, not the cheapest place in the world and paid about 5euros each about $6 check online: I expect stainless is more expensive and longterm not so good.
