Immigration Requirements while cruising South Pacifi
Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at taking my first position crewing on a boat sailing from British Colombia to Fiji. The Captian has mentioned that I will need a (refundable) return air ticket from the south pacific, I assume for immigration purposes.

Can anyone give me more information how immigration procedures work when cruising in the south pacific. I have a new zealand passport and my partner a canadian passport. We will be visiting the Marquesas, Tahiti, Samoa and Fiji.

Generally you check in with the port captain, immigration and customs. With your NZ & Canadian passports you will get a visa on arrival.

In French Polynesia you post a bond ($$$$) equal to the amount of a return airticket. The bond is returned when you check out. This can be done with a visa card. You lose about 5% on the transaction.

If your skipper joins the Pacific Puddle Jump, sponsored by Latitude 38, you may not have to post the bond.

For more details on each country's immigration rules and requirements check out the country pages at

I found the check in procedures in all the places you will be visiting relatively painless.

Have a great trip!

Thanks for the information Aeventyr60... I have a better understanding of the situation now. Do you know if I can post a bond in the Marquesas equal to the amount of a ticket to any country or does it have to be my home country (New Zealand), or to the port I disembarked from (Vancouver). was very helpful. Thanks again.

Re: Immigration Requirements while cruising South Pacifi
I think the immigration officials have a fixed amount they charge for the bond. I really can't remember if the amount was exactly what it cost back to our point of origin or not. Since it is done on a Visa card these days, the exact amount won't really matter as you will be getting it back anyway.

The Pacific Puddle Jump waiver no longer is available, although when we came through there was a fee you could pay that covered it through a shipping agent. The air ticket that is required is to anywhere in the country of the passport, not where you departed from (since your own country has to take you back, another one does not).
