Bristol 32 for eastern seaboard to caribbean and cruising

Hi.

I wondering what folks might have to say about this boat. It would be a full time live aboard. We would sail from Nova Scotia to the Bahama's the end of October each year and cruise the carib waters and gulf with a return to Nova Scotia in April the following year. So 6 months living here and 6 months living there. What about sailing her Halifax to Bermuda and then to the Bahama's? I know she is not a fast boat but that is ok as we are only looking to cruise. The galley looked a bit small but not a big issue to modify. Are there any known issues with these boats mid 70's to 80. I'm also wondering about issues with the swing keel/centerboard as we'd be interested in the shoal keel version. I was hoping to get a 35 foot boat but this looks nice for 2 people would 3 feet really make all that much difference? I'm starting to put together a list of boats for purchase about 3 years from now when we will be ready to commit.

Don't think it makes sense to go Bermuda-Bahamas and you would be doing this trip at the beginning of November (common sense and insurance reasons). This is the route you would take to get to the Eastern Caribbean. It is not an easy trip in many years. If you are going down the coast (mix of sailing with lots of motoring) you will need a really reliable engine. Lots of people do it in boats smaller than a Bristol 32 so it would work but 3 extra feet would be nice. Remember the 3 feet is in the middle, not at the ends. If the budget allows you might want to consider a more modern design since it is almost certainly beamier and would give you more space. Also a boat with fin keel (even a long one) is more easily handled when motoring in tight spaces which you will get in the ICW.

Finished the circumnavigation in early February in Grenada. Have to work on a book project for the next several months so the boat will be waiting for next year.

Carl's Sail Calculator

Here is a site that will allow you to evaluate that specific design or compare with other designs.
