best time for cruising the 1000 islands?

we have never been there before, and are planning on cruising for a few weeks this summer. our schedule is flexible so we could arrange time from june-september. any schedule considerations revolving around biting/annoying insects, crowded anchorages, other events, etc are appreciated.

I would lean toward early September since the crowds are gone, better winds, and generally decent weather. If going earlier check the date of the 1812 Overture by the Kingston Symphony. Great fun with real cannons and perfect setting.

The crowds are hardly ever all that bad. I'd stay away from Alex Bay on July 4th, or during Pirate Days. Check the schedule for the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton. The weekend of the boat show is super busy, but it's a neat experience, and the parade is best seen from the water. But starting your trip the Tuesday after Labor Day will definitely miss all the crowds and the water will be still as warm as it ever is.
