video: Swan 48 Bella Luna offshore voyage. Hove to in a squall.

Hi everyone,
Here's the next episode of 'Sailing Swan 48 Bella Luna 1,500 nautical miles from Georgia to Saint Martin.' We're almost to Tortola!

Days 7-8. As Mo's seasickness worsens, they encounter a squall and heave to.

As always, we really appreciate any comments or suggestions for making our videos more interesting, exciting, educational, or better in any way.

Thanks!
Happy sailing,
DrakeParagon

video: Swan 48 Bella Luna 1,500 nautical mile voyage - arrival in Tortola!

Hi everyone,

Here's the final episode of our 'Sailing Bella Luna' voyage adventure series.

Days 9-11 - We encounter trouble with the auto pilot and Mo introduces a brilliant new footwear idea.
Enjoy a beautiful sailing montage and our last sunrise before we arrive at our destination in Tortola.

As always, we really appreciate any comments or suggestions for making our videos more interesting, exciting, educational, or better in any way.

Thanks!

Happy sailing,

As always, great job. I really liked your comparison of the helming and ride of the Swan to the Westsail. Always great info. Oh, I also liked the fact that even a Swan creaks and groans while underway (even more than my crappy C27).

Thanks Smackdaddy, We really appreciate and highly regard all of your feedback! Yes, that Swan 48 was fast, but she did creak and groan! When we were sailing fast, the bow section would pound into the waves, sometimes so hard that the whole boat would shake. When that was at its worst I felt so sorry for Mo who was horribly seasick and in her berth in the forward section.

I think during the NARC Rally the bow hitting the waves might have been what caused the speed transducer to pop out of the through hull and into the locker. In his NARC Rally interview, AJ describes how that brought seawater in up to the floorboards before they found and plugged it.

So since this was in Feb. How has Mo held up to other voyages? Have you guys done other big trips? Oh, the gimbaled shoes was a great idea!

Re: Swan 48 Bella Luna tour and sailing adventure series

Hand steering for a day?

In 2000 we lost the autopilot about half way through the 2400 mile delivery from Honolulu. 8 days of broad reaching in up to 35 knots and 12 - 15 foot seas was brutal. I could last ho more than an hour, 30 minutes was more common. We had a crew of 5. My photo is from those days, you can see a a wave just behind me. The photo was taken from the companionway, looking up.

The boat I am bringing back this year has no autopilot. It is the same one I brought back two years ago, so I am prepared. This time it will have a dodger, last time it didn't - very wet.

Flat bottom boats are great for fast downwind sailing, but upwind the pounding is incredible.
