Hi ScottUK,

I used a stock DJI Phantom quadcopter which comes with its own remote control, DJI propeller guards, a GoPro Hero 3 Black camera, and Fatshark FPV goggles. I didn't use an electric gimbal, but did fly the Phantom in 'attitude' mode instead of 'GPS' mode for smoother flight. I've also posted a bunch of aerial photos on our facebook page at:

and

We filmed a ton of aerial footage from Boston and Gloucester, MA, Lunenberg, Nova Scotia, St John's, Newfoundland, and all over the south west coast of Greenland before our quad named "Harry" crashed into an enormous iceberg. We'll start publishing our weekly videos of this 6 month voyage starting in January 2014.

I can't wait to get another of the same rig and to be up and flying again when we reach Ireland. I'm also considering a AeroXcraft or DJI Phantom zenmuse electric gimbal.

Happy sailing,

Drake

Just before pushing off from North Carolina in March of 2013, Drake and Monique gave a presentation to the Pasquotank River Yacht Club in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. This is an excerpt from that presentation. The rest of it will be published soon.

Drake: How can the average Joe ever do what you are doing? Are you rich, self employed? How do you finance your 24/7 voyage? Aspiring cruisers want to know.
