Best times for leaving Lake Erie eastward

I have a 1968 Cal28 named Feng Shui on the hard in Ashtabula, Ohio, and am planning to launch and move aboard this spring. When would be the earliest time I could comfortably leave through the Erie Canal? Also, where to unstep my mast in and around Buffalo?
