Cruising the Caribbean in February!

I finalized my plans to go cruising in the Caribbean in February. Here are the stops on our itinerary: San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Kitts, Nevis, Grenada, Bonaire, and Aruba. I can't wait!


Ok, so I won't be sailing my own boat. In fact, I won't be sailing at all. I'll be on Princess Cruise Lines (Crown Princess), but at least I'll be in warm, blue waters!

I am getting dragged onto one of those, probably in May. In our case, it will be the Big Red Boat for just 3-4 days to the Bahamas and back. My wife has sold the kids on it big time so I would be the majorly grumpy Grinch if I didn't go along with the idea. I find ships to be a paradox in that they are more confining to me than little boats. When you are on a little boat, you are on the great big ocean, but when you are on a big boat, you are on the boat. The shore excursions could be fun though. I will tell my wife that I am doing recon for sailing in the winter.

I agree that a cruise ship is not the ideal way to "sail" the Carribean.

But if you think of it as a big hotel that magically appears at different locations every day, feeds you, and entertains the kids, it can be a good family vacation. We've been on several, starting when our daughters were 3+4. The kids loved the supervised play areas, and we liked having the option of some time alone. Sure, you only get a few hours at each port, but you can scope it out for future trips. Hint: Bring a bottle of your liquor of choice. It will reduce the bar bills significantly.

If you can, plan time to explore the fortifications of Old San Juan. They're not far from the ship.
