Canadians Ports

We left Detroit for our 2 year Caribbean Cruise and went up the Canadian side of Lake Erie. Great stops! Best ice cream of the entire trip was in Port Stainley. Took the mast down in Port Colbourn. Big mistake! It was one hell of a trip across to enter the Erie Canal. Canadian Ports are a lot of fun. I think you need to buy a special Canadian Cruising sticker and provide 3 passport photos. A pain.

West Erie islands

We spent a week at South Beach Resort on Sandusky Bay. They have a hotel, cabins, 3 pools and a protected deep water marina. Very family oriented. We have a 19' Newport Holiday and it was nice to be on the bay when the lake was too rough. Biggest drawback is that the cabins fill up early and you need to book in Dec or Jan for the summer.

Port Dover, which you tuck into after rounding Long Point on the way east, is a pretty, touristy port of call. There's a yacht club (called, strangely enough, Port Dover Yacht Club) and a fair-sized marina, Port Dover Harbour Marina, in addition to two other marinas with transient slips. They hosted a tall ships festival last year. The town has an unhappy notoriety for hosting a bikers rendezvous, but that's in April.
