Yeah, I was in that about 5 miles away but in water. I was off the boat but watched the whole thing. All thosetrees in the picture were lush, green rain forest too! There were 208 boats knocked over in that yard. Of the 40 boats at anchor where we were tied up, 6 survived.
Thats one thing to beware of still, buying a boat in the caribe...a lot of superficially repaired insurance write off boats still exist. I know of one very nice boat that was listed with no mention of the fact that she had been totally submerged, holed and sunk after she was "restored".
Anyway...didn't want to dwell on old news...but thought the picture was pretty damn impressive testimony to the force of a big hurricane wind.

A great site in general, but the events and perspectives around Hurricane Ivan is powerful stuff.

We were there last year and still saw evidence of Ivan. Ragged hilltops where the vegetation still shows damage, the roofless church atop the hill and other still-damaged buildings. Nearly everyone else had new roofs!





We stayed at the same dock that Camaradarie rode the storm out on (for some of it) and being able to visualize the area while reading his log made it even more compelling.

Joe...you're right...massive losses..and after Ivan the insurance hurricane "box" in the caribbean was moved down a degree to force cruisers to go to Trinidad or Venezuela during hurricane season or not be covered. This has been problematic for many cruisers since Trini experienced some crime and Venezuela has both Chavez and its' own crime problems. Thankfully, the Trini crime issue seems to be a lot better recently.
