South Carolina Changes Law

South Carolina has decided to become a winter spot for boaters. The tax law has been changed. It use to be that if you were in state longer than 90 days you were subject to county property tax and it was steep. Now the state has given the counties the right to extend the time period to 6 months. Horry County, the Myrtle Beach, Grand Strand area has gone with the 6 months. Now boaters can winter here with no worry. We don’t have to winterize our boats, lot’s of marina space and lot’s of things to do. You don’t burn near as much fuel getting here as heading way south. Even in winter we still have a lot of warm days. So come on down yall, and spend the winter in the Myrtle Beach area. No I am not with the chamber of commerce. I am just a boat owner that would like to see this area used as a major winter stopover.

I'll second Zackc's sentiments. South Carolina is a great place to winter, with moderate temps in the coldest months, and far more reasonable slip fees than Florida. A lot of boat insurance policies require that yachts be north of the Savannah River during hurricane season, so you can hang out while you anxiously watch the Weather Channel.

Would transients leave their boats in the water for a winter-over, or do most folks haul them out? Thanks.

You keep 'em in the water here. Year-round sailing, baby! Unfortunately, the nice winter weather lures old folks out of their assisted living centers by the billions. Oh... you thought you could get through the check-out line at Publix in under an hour? Sorry, but you'll be stuck in line listening to some ninety-year-old explain how Viagra changed his life.
