Advice on NYC to Palm Beach

I am about to start a two year circumnavigation. The first leg will be from NYC to Ft. Lauderdale. I will be using the ICW from Norfork. Since I have never gone through the ICW, I need some advice on time delay caused by bridges and the like from someone who have done the trip. I am also curios on what to expect sailing offshore from NYC to Cape May.

NYC to Mayport in 2 legs (Atlantic City, then Mayport) - just pick your days.

Enjoy and Good Luck!

Advice on NYC to Palm Beach

I just did the section from Norfolk to the GA/FL border. the offshore route seems adventageous below cape fear . The bridges are a pain, but one never has to wait more then an hour during the rush hour traffic times but otherwise don''t cause any delays at all. Maybe we had to wait five or ten minutes at rushhour, and only once did I have to wait a hour and that was in Norfolk when we got to the brigde when it just closed Don''t even think of the ICW with out the "guide" to confusing otherwise with markers etc. The marinas are great, all are about a buck a foot. north, the people are less pleasant to deal with, the SC and GA folks are the best! My guess would be the upper end would be easy, but take the C-Bay if the ocean weather isn''t what you like. I had thought we could do better then the 50 miles a day everyone talks about. A good day was 50 to 60 and only twice did we do better. Currents and wind make quite a differance. we draw 5 1/2 feet, and got stuck a bit about 4 times, and it was always from not paying attention. we motored off, never got really stuck!
good luck,
Paul

Advice on NYC to Palm Beach

Thank you for your advice. I am currently in Atlantic City making my down. Tonight we will be moving to Norfork where we intend to start the ICW up to Beufort. Depending on the weather, we may take offshore route from Beufort onwards.

Advice on NYC to Palm Beach

Had some rough weather between Ocean City, MD and Wachapreaugue, VA. The forecast had predicted 5ft wave but I could have sworn we where in 10ft waves and 30knots gusts. I am assuming so because the waves where over our heads and had to raise our eyes to see the crest.

The boat handled well and I am now in the Intercoastal until Beaufort, NC where I intend to go outside again. Taking my time through Pamlico Sound and the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Advice on NYC to Palm Beach

Finally made it to Beaufort on Friday after wasting two weeks in the outbanks of NC. Just couldn''t resist visiting them . I am now in Wrightsville Beach and will be heading to CHarleston on Saturday. One three more days not to hit Florida Coast.

Made it down to Charleston, SC where I have been waiting for sails repair and ordered a new set of sails. I will be leaving Charleston on Monday sailing outside straight to Florida. The wind is blowing from the S and SW. Looks like I will tacking a lot.

Advice on NYC to Palm Beach

Passed Palm Beach two days ago. I am currently in Ft. Lauderdale for the next two weeks before I cross the channel to the Bahamas. I will appreciate any advice for cruisers who have been to the Bahamas.
