Maine Cruise

Hi Everyone. We are planning on a Maine cruise this summer,coming from the Chesapeake. My question is about mooring & marina costs, as compared to the Ches. I''m aware that the Cape Cod,RI,MA areas are much more expensive than I''m used to, but I was wondering about Maine.

$15 to $20 a night for a mooring. Probably $1.50 a so per foot for dockage. Check out the cruising guides, do some internet surfing and make some phone calls. Dennett''s Wharf in Castine has guest moorings for eh . . . $20/night or less? Belfast harbor has moorings and dockage. Call the Harbormaster (or Harbor Mistress? As I recall?). Rockland is Journey''s End, The Moorings Restaurant (?) and Marina, and the Harbormaster has moorings. Hmmmm. Buck''s Harbor Marine in Brooksville has guest moorings. Dockage in Stonington on the town dock. Also call Great Harbor Marina in SW Harbor for dockage, moorings. I don''t usually dock unless it''s free, which many times I''ve been able to arrange. Eaton''s Boatyard in Castine has moorings and dockage, too. Don''t remember the last time - yes I do - Lobsterfest 1998 in rockland - no, the harbormaster gave me his mooring that night b/c the NY Yacht Club had reserved everything and didn''t show up. I hope someone made them pay for the space nobody could use. Almost can''t get to the water from the land b/c prices are so high, now can''t get to the land from the water b/c the flatlanders are reserving all space for the season. Ahhh weee, hence, we remain at 18N64W. KW

viexile 18n 64w must be nice in saint thomas and a long dose it take to sail from there to maine from about how long of a trip. how many days dose it take you.

875 miles to Bermuda; 825+- miles to Ferry Landing, Deer Isle, Maine. Trout ain''t bitin'' yet on the (Secret) River. First weekend ''0 May is always best. We are resident here now, though. Summer up home some, but still working. June this year, for parent''s 50th and a little Eggemoggin Reaching. A GREAT cruise in Maine would take in the Lobsterfest or the Blues Festival in Rockland. (July, Aug.). KW 18N64W is almost exactly where we filled a cooler with dolphin and wahoo last weekend. South of St. John.

Gershel, keep in mind that in many of the more remote spots in Maine, you can anchor for free. Merchant''s Row, Seal Bay and Winter Harbor on Vinalhaven, Duck Harbor on Isle Au Haut come to mind. Of course these places don''t have the amenities that some people crave, but they''re awfully nice.

Otherwise, $20/night for a mooring is about average. You''ll pay more in places like Buck Harbor and Southwest (especially if you rent from Hinckley); less in some other spots. I''m not sure about dock space because we so rarely use it, but I think the going rate is $1.75/foot in my home port in Casco Bay, higher in places like Camden, lower in others.

Get the Taft guide - Cruising Guide to the Maine Coast. That and a few charts and you''ll have all the information you need.

Marc we are planning the same cruise from Worton Creek leaving end of June. What route are you taking? Have gone Cape May Block to MV the past two summers, but this year we are going through NY to keep the crew happy.

Devildad; Never did the trip, but initially I thought we would go Cape May-Block I.& return through LI Sound. I think we will go sometime in July. I''m in the Middle River.
Why weren''t they happy with the straight shot?

The boat is named Drama Queen and my wife is a theater teacher. She needs her NY fix from time to time. I prefer Cape May to Block it is so much of a thirl for us bay sailors. I also am taking some friends from the UK and they would like to see the harbor, choppy and crazy as it is. We will be in NY for the 4th, should be wild.
