Buying a CS 30

I have an accepted offer on a CS 30.
1986 boat. It's in pretty good condition but needs some work after 2 yrs on the hard.

Anything specific I should watch out for in a survey?
A prior insurance survey mentioned a small crack at the keel-hull joint.
I've heard there can be some water intrusion issues in the wood behind the nav desk.
Plus I have seen comments about adding an extension on to the holding tank drain.

Engine is apparently in good shape. Talked with the mechanic who has been maintaining the Volvo for the last several years - he says it was in fair shape when he last winterized it (although he was not a fan of the the Volvo diesel in general as he feels the parts are too expensive and the motor is not as reliable as a yanmar).

Any advice is appreciated.

Mark

Buying a CS 30

Here is the listing.
http://m.yachtworld.com/mobile/boats/1986/Cs-30-2254686/Chester-Basin/Canada

Photos are 2 yrs old - it has been stored on the hard since.
I'm pretty excited (and nervous).
With the market conditions I got a good price - but I expect I'll have some work to do to bring it back.

Re: Buying a CS 30

Just make sure you get it at a good price because i was going to go see that boat but the broker told me i should forget about it. I am not saying this ship is not good or anything but i think that ship was not taking care of too much.
Tho the broker never told me what was wrong with it so i dont really know.
Also there is so many ship in Halifax area make sure you visit alot of ships before making the move. I did visit 12 sailboats in Halifax area before i bought my Cs just to make sure ill get the best one for the buck.

Hope it help.
Mike.

Re: Buying a CS 30

W/ some elbow grease that cold clean up nice. Refinish the wood work, new cabin sole and recover the cushions. Someone did a quick sloppy paint job trying to make the motor look better.

Re: Buying a CS 30

I bought my first boat in 1984 and it was a CS30. I visited the factory every weekend and watched the build. They are great boats. CS was the best manufacturer of production boats in Canada. And one of the few not to go bankrupt. The weakest point in the boat is the Volvo 2002, a very poor and unreliable engine.
