CS 33 #1 Head Sail Rehab for Furler

I was wondering if anyone has rehabiliated an original CS 33 (1983) #1 head sail for a furler? I believe the original is a 150+ and currently has a zipper sleeve attachment to the head stay. While it still works I would like to be able to keep it on the furler for ease of use. Thanks

A zipper sleeve on a boat that size is quite unusual.. But in any case the sail can certainly be modified for the foil by the addition of the proper sized luff tape (most likely #6).

You will most likely also have to have the sail cut down to allow for the space the furler drum takes up on the forestay length. This will result in a smaller sail, but with better visibility underneath the foot.

As a sail that was not designed specifically for a furler there may be some limitations, but it will be usable. You should also add a UV protective strip along the foot and leech if you plan to leave the sail up and furled between trips (as most do)

While I have never seen a zipper sleeve on a jib, cutting down, taping, and adding a UV shield to a 150% for a 36 ran something like $800. If the sail is not in very good condition, you would be better off buying a new sail, cut for furling use.

Not really. I had one on my 1988 CS36 Merlin when I bought it in 1988. It was all the rage with North Sails. A zipper sleeve with a luff tape just in the middle of the sail. This way when you reefed it, it would take up the slack in the middle first. No need for a foam luff. I think they called it "Aeroluff".
