Installing A Drinking Water Filter - 36T

We installed this last summer and it works great!

For drinking water on board we use a GE whole house, cartridge style, water filter set up using this cartridge & this GE housing. It installs between the output of the pump and the fixtures and is very, very easy to do.

For added filtering we also have a Brita faucet mounted filter in the galley on the faucet for double filtration. We drink right out of our 1979 tanks with this set up no problem!!

One thing about filters is you need to "exercise" your water system at a minimum weekly or the filters will go bad. I run the water for about a minute each time I'm on board and this keeps the filters fresh. We save a ton on bottled water by being able to drink right out of our tanks and get a full season out of the GE filter.

Location is behind the starboard settee.

A close up:

Sorry about the insulation in the photos but it kept the boat cool when down south..

labatt will become famous soon enough
What's the taste like vs. bottled water? The filter companies always say that the resulting water is fairly tasteless. I know our current water doesn't smell too bad, but we still prefer bottled. This looks like an easy and good addition! What was the cost?

Actually the taste is great..

Actually the taste is great but you need to buy the filters with the charcoal in it as it adds back minerals taken out.

We are from Maine and are spoiled by Poland Springs water. Yet even at home we installed a dedicated two stage under sink drinking water system with it's own dedicated drinking water faucet.

A buddy who used to work for Poland Spring was even amazed at the taste. While not 100% it tastes about 90% as good as the best bottled water..

I think the original filter housing and one filter were about $35.00, the filter wrench about $4.00, about 6 feet of hose, some hose clamps, and a couple of barbed fittings for a total of about $50.00 + the cost of the Brita for the faucet which was about $20.00. So I'd say the whole project should come in around 8/10 of a boat buck or $80.00..

I got the filter and housing at Home Depot and the hose and fittings from Hamilton Marine..
