CS30 Replacing the holding tank - poly or stainless???

We are new owners of a 1987 CS, and are considering replacing the holding tank.
We have heard that stainless is the way to go, because the odors would not permeate the skin of the tank, but that they corrode instead, and to stick with poly.
(Only number 1 will be "stored".... )
Any thoughts??
All I want, like most ladies, is an odor free boat!!!!

I would suggest you take a look at Peggy Hall's Book, "How to Get Rid of Boat Odors". It covers how to attack this problem from many angles. Boat odors are often a multi-layered issue, and this small and inexpensive book gives you a system approach that I'm sure will help.

For what it's worth, my understanding is that you want to stick with the plastic tanks.

Thanks, Chris...

We are going to see how good/bad it is this season and then make plans for
any replacement.
It will likely be the plastic tank..there are only 2 of us, and we'll use the
loo at the marina when ever possible.

Just waiting for our splash date!

Do not use stainless on a holding tank the acids will eat it. I would be very, very, very surprised if your CS tank is odor permeated. Ours is a 1979 and not odor permeated. It is usually the hoses not the tank that permeates and causes the odor. Replace all your hoses first then see how it smells.

I'm replacing my holding tank discharge hose this spring, Its the original, its in rough shape, and it smells. Should have replaced it last year, but I didn't (lazy, sailing, other fix it jobs, crappy job, pick your excuse). Replaced the hose from the head to the holding tank and it made a big differance to the smell in the head. I used and will be using a white hose that is less rubbery and more sort of plasticky than the black metal spiral reinforced hose( all that because I can't spell non-per...perm...whatever).
I got our CS30 two years ago and I know you just got yours last season so I thought I'd pass on some problems we discovered to you It might save you some hassles. But I'll do it on another post before this one times out.

Anyway, some things to watch for. When we first started sailing our boat ( which would be when we first started sailing ) It would fill with water and the head would be full of crap which we would have to clean up. I'm slow in the uptake but even I figured out that something was wrong, after all who could enjoy sailing if you have to clean out the head and bilge after every sail. The answers came from another CS30 owner in our marina.
The head. It has no vented loop between the holding tank and head. If the joker valve goes it backfills when the boat heels. He suggested putting in a new head. One that the pump locks in place when not in use adding another layer of protection from backfilling. Clean out a crap filled head a couple of times and the $150 seems very cheap. If your head does not have a pump that locks in place think about replacing it ( this is why the head to holding tank hose was replaced but the discharge hose wasn't ).
Cockpit drain hoses. Agian the hoses here where the originals and in very bad shape. Had the wife fill the cockpit with water and watched them drain. they leaked very badly and in one spot the water poured through. The cockpit though hull is above water but when in a good heal the water was pouring in, and as new sailors, and not very competent we realy has her healed ( OK I realy had her healed ). So check you cockpit hoses and see what shape there in, good chance they may have been replaced already. To check you need to get to the end of the hull through the cockpit locker. It was a horrible job replacing them, I'm a big guy, its a tight fit over lots of sharp stringers, to get to hoses siezed to the through hulls. After two days of pain and missery a passer by on the dock told me he had owned a CS30 and I just needed to remove the propane locker to have good access to the cockpit hoses without going through the cockpit. I felt like killing him.

we haven't met but I'm on G dock and I think you are on E Dock. I did a complete refit of my CS30 holding tank and hoses last winter. The CS30 holding tank is configured with the pump out hose attaching to the tank about 5 inches above the lowest part of the tank. This configuration prevents completely emptying the tank at pump out time. Peter at Holland Marine sells a retrofit fitting that fixes this. A strong stomach, rubber gloves and it can be installed quite easily.

Proper seamanship dictates that your toilet inlet through hull valve should be CLOSED/OFF at all times unless the head is in use to prevent sinking your boat. March/April Good Old Boat has an excellent article - Holding Tank Essentials.
