spain to canada

we (my husband and I) are trying to plan a trip with a 60 foot twin keeled steel ketch from Spain to Canada direct passing the islands of Ponta Delgada mid way to see the northern lights does anyone have info on the best time of year and conditions we will face ??
We were planning on December as they said that's the peak of Northern Lights this year but we are wondering if that would be a good time to sail to that route.

Thanks,,

As to what to expect in December, you might want to take a look at the Pilot Chart of the North Atlantic for that month. Pilot charts are available at Maritime Safety Information. Two things you can certainly expect are cold and gales.
