Excellent Rick!

That's pretty much what I had in mind. I was also going to make a support for the shaft to support it while I drill. I'll take a short length of 2x4 and notch one end for the shaft to sit in, then cut it to length on the boat.

I'm not real clear on your tool to hold the coupling using angle iron. are you suggesting drilling a length so it can be bolted to one side of the coupling? That would hold it. The end would jam against the inside of the hull. I was thinking I could prop a block of wood between the prop and the hull, but I like your idea better..imagining how many times I need to dive to reset the block once it floats out of position.

Yes, that is what I mean.

Keep the "tool" to hold the coupler if you need to replace a broken pin.

Don't forget to make up a couple of spare pins just in case.

That's a great idea.
I'll bring a foot or so of angle stock to the boat tomorrow.

Thanks!

Here is sorta what it should look like when bolted on(of course this one is welded on).

Use at least 2 ft. of angle if you can, you can always cut if you have to.

Rick,

Your idea worked great. I drilled the hole (easy) and put in the pin. Putting the pin in was the most difficult part. The pin is actually a 2 part thing, the first is a split sleeve that goes in, then a second solid pin that goes inside that.

I didn't have clearance to use angle stock, so used thick flat stock instead. It worked great. I'm not completely finished, I need to get back with a helper to help torque the lock ring a bit more.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I hope this fixes it.

Glad all worked well.

I think that the pins primary use is to position the prop shaft in the coupler and the clamping collar part on the coupler is what transmits the torque to the prop so be sure to keep that nut tight.

Now go sailing.
