Unhappy 3gm30 - runs warm and white smoke

We are getting white smoke (strong odor of fuel) at rpm above 2k regardless of load. Not temperature related. In addition yard says engine is getting hot at 3k rpm, thinks not enough cooling water coming through.

So far, impeller replaced, mixing elbow replaced, raw water strainer checked.

They are "guessing" could be bad water pump, heat exchanger, hoses.

Is there any reason to think these two things are related?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

A strong odor of fuel without blowing black smoke may indicate that one cylinder is not firing at all and fuel is just burning in the exhaust.

We just had the same thing. Thought it was several things, head gasket etc. Ended up being bad injectors. Removed both, one totally clogged, and had them rebuilt with new tips. Just ran this past weekend for 4 hours and no white smoke or diesel film on the water when we came back to marina.
I will add that it was interesting getting one of them to seat back properly, but finally got it accomplished.
It was suggested to us by a mechanic that it is possible to add fuel additive (10oz) and run for at least 1 hr at dock and see if it clears before removing the injectors. We had already pulled them when we were told.
However ours were so bad, I don't think it would have helped. Good Luck!

I was going to say the injectors could need rebuilding. I'm not sure that's going to solve the high temp issue, but you may have to solve one problem at a time here.

After an ample application of Boat Bucks we seemed to have solved the problem. Replaced water pump, circulating pump (didn't know I had two), air intake filter, exhaust hose, flushed heat exchanger.

Now have plenty of water going through the engine, it runs cooler and even cooler at higher RPMS, no smoke.

Thank you all for your suggestions and ideas.

Will probably get the injectors looked at over the winter.
