My dad always keeps an "emergency prop loss kit" onboard. This consists of a heavy duty rubber work glove (not the disposable kind), a hose clamp, and a screwdriver. When we ran aground or hit a log and the prop and shaft are forcibly removed, we would just slide the glove over the shaft and tighten the clamp over it. We had to do this several times, and it worked excellent.

Good idea. Also if you install a 2nd zinc to the shaft inside the boat close to the stuffing box it will prevent your shaft from leaving if the coupling becomes disconnected.

What if if the new shaft doesn't fit the cutlass bearing or if you damage it getting the shaft out.
