Yanmar YSE8 - Runs fine then stops after an hour or so - Ideas why ?

Hi,

After running the engine for a while it will turn itself off as if I had turned the throttle down.
I cannot restart it for around 20-30 mins, I'm guessing until it cools down again.
When running it sounds good and seems in good order.

Its as if it becomes starved of fuel when it dies.

It also seems to leak oil which causes it to smoke when it gets hot.
I don't know if this is related..

Could anyone offer any clues as to what are the possible causes ?

I have a Yanmar 3JH2E that did the same thing when the Racor fuel filters needed to be changed. Change your fuel filter (filters), and I think you will solve your problem. I don't think the oil leak is related to the shut down problem...just my .02 worth.

You might want to check your fuel tank breather line. It sounds like it's plugged. That can cause a negative pressure, and fuel starvation after the engine has run for a time.

Thanks very much for both suggestions, as soon as I get down to the boat again I will replace the fuel filter and check the fuel tank breather line.

Sometime a bad coil will cause problems when they get hot.

A long time ago, you could get negative rep points

If it were my boat though, I'd start looking at the fuel system. Some boats have a fuel strainer in the tank, a primary, and a secondary filter (which makes 3 filters!). I'd check all three.

The vent tube is a great idea. You can test that theory by removing the fuel cover when the engine begins to bog down. If removing the cover corrects the problem, the problem is the vent. If not, I would bet on one of the filters.

Hopefully there is not a strainer in the fuel tank as they're a b***h to get to and shouldn't be there. Best to get the fuel out of the tank unhindered and deal with it in a filter. The vent is a good bet, a clogged one would let you run a while then stop suction. Or the filters. Not much to stop a diesel as long as it is getting fuel and air if it's already running.

Sounds like fuel system....start with the easy things...filters etc..

Just a thought. How full is your tank?....
