How much will I pay for used engine?

I'm a novice so I'm not sure I really know! We have our eye on a good old boat 33' sloop/cruiser and plan to use her mostly for sailing around the harbor, day trips, etc. I just don't want to get stranded :-). We bought the boat w/out an engine (it had an Atomic 4).

assuming you can find a Kubota based engine, it will be a near perfect replacement. If you find a used diesel dealer let us all know. An outboard is not a good alternative either. I'll let others tell you why.

beta marine makes a direct replacement for the atomic 4 as well...either will be a good deal more reliable and easier to work on.

A new replacement is going to run $7000 or so. A rebuilt about half that. Used but not rebuilt, maybe $1,000 to $2000, depending on condition. If you pay to have it installed, figure another $3,000 or so.

Thisis, I would suggest that you shop locally for someone who will sell you an engine (new or rebuilt) INCLUDING the installation AND the warranty all as one bundle.

There is very little that can be more frustrating than hearing your "new used engine" has failed, and the guy who sold it saying "Well, it was installled wrong" and the guy who installed it saying "well the engine was no good" and you being the guy stuck in the middle with the big hole in your wallet.

I'd pick the guy with the best warranty and the least number of loud angry customers outside his shop.

Tell us where the boat is, maybe someone can recommend a local shop to you.
