Help with yanmar 2qm15 stuck transmission

I have a 1976 newport sailboat that I am restoring. I was away from the boat for about 6 months and now my transmission will not go into gear. It appears to be stuck on the inside of the gear box. The transmission lever will not move. The transmission was working fine before I went out of town. The sailboat has milky fluid in the box so water has somehow seeped in to the gear box but this might have happened when the transmission was partially submerged. Can anyone tell me what could be the possible causes or remedies. Thanks for any help!

Partially submerged? I suspect you've answered your own question. Sounds like a removal and replacement, certainly a teardown and rebuild if that's practical.

Your next challenge is going to be getting the gearbox off the engine. I spent days on mine -the input shaft going into the flex plate on the flywheel rusts in nice and tight and is a real mother to get off.

If it comes to that and you need advice, PM me. Been there done that.
