Exhaust elbow help needed

My Westerbeke 30 exhaust elbow bit the dust. I was surprised and quite happy to order a seemingly exact replacement.....turns out it was made out of aluminum. As I researched it, this is not an acceptable material for diesel wet exhausts. However, the seller says he has "sold hundreds of these" and that it is no problem. Did I read the ABYC pfd incorrectly?

Anyone with experience in this? Anyone know where I can get one like this in a material from table 1?:

P.S. The dealer is NOT Torrensen, and I would prefer to leave them nameless as I have no prior experience with them. I used the Torrensen link because it has a color pic.

You might contact Transatlantic Diesel (TAD for perkins engines, perkins diesel, perkins marine, perkins parts, perkins generators, perkins service ). They deal in Perkins but I seem to recall they also handled Westerbeak.

My Beta came with an aluminum injection elbow, which is short. The high rise option is stainless allegedly stainless.

TAD I am pretty sure handels west.Torrenson handels west.Some make them from a 90 with a T,different opinions on this.When mine goes plan on useing a street L & having a machine shop add the water pipe.If you do find a cast one suggest you sit down with stiff drink & prep h.marc

Shogun: I've never owned a Beta but I have heard good things about them...if it comes with an aluminum elbow maybe I should do some more research.....I don't have experience with this...maybe melting points of aluminum vs mild or galvanized steel? Opinions on this?

Marc: The Westerbeke part I took off was iron, definitely heavier. The replacement is a MMD part....aluminum....which made me look for the spec....which made me wonder. I prefer the pre-made solution because of the length of my "to do" list, but having worked by specs in my job I balk at placing this piece. I appreciate your response.

Hmmm, I replaced the exhaust elbow on my Universal 5432, which is family to the Westerbeke I believe, and the old one had been iron and the new one from Universal was aluminum I believe. I'm not sure, but I seem to remember it being lighter.

In any case, it was the factory replacement for the elbow I had and so I assumed it was compatible for the purpose. What did you hear about aluminum not being a good choice?

Is it a heat issue in the absence of cooling water? Or is it a corrosion issue, in which case iron is definitely afflicted too. What else?

That version of P-1 is really old. So I looked up the current version.

Nanni have done the same thing. The new ones are now aluminium (with a zinc).

There is really no ideal metal for an exhaust elbow. SS does not have a very long life in this application.
I think we could debate which of SS, aluminium, or iron will have the longest life, but they will all need replacing.
When they block with carbon they are very difficult to clean out so maybe a finite life is a good thing, you don’t feel so bad replacing it.
Keep an eye on them failure is common and in some cases this allows water into the cylinders.
Inspect every couple of years and consider it a disposable item.
