Can i run my Volvo on reverse all season?

Just installed a Maxprop on my boat and now i am moving astern when i put the engine ahead. I have an older model 2 cyl Volvo and i know it is turning right handed (engine ahead clockwise when viewed from astern). I followed the ''right turning'' table from the maxprop manual for the pitch settings, i can see my shaft turning clockwise and i am moving astern so the error must be in the maxprop manual. My question is do i have to haul the boat out and reverse the pitch on the propeller or can i cruise with the engine moving astern for the whole season? Engine model 2000 2 cyl, year 1989.

Are you sure you installed a rh prop?marc

That can really be and issue depending on the transmissions thrust bearing design as many are not built to run long periods in reverse

What model gearbox do you have?

I have a VP, albeit a 2003, and I thought VP gearboxes were left handed - anticlockwise rotation.

If your old prop was lying face down on the ground, what hand would you have used to pick it up with your palm facing your feet? This will show what hand prop yup have.

Sounds as though you have put a right hand prop on a left hand rotation shaft.

I would be interested in what model gearbox you have, and the VP engine model.

By "face" do you mean the side facing aft when the prop is mounted correctly?

Either way, if you think of the prop taken off the shaft and lying on the ground.

But think of it sitting on its forward face. If you can envisage standing over it, whichever hand can pick it up with your palm facing your foot, will show which rotation the prop is.

You could arrange a 'half lift' over a lunch break (staying in the slings) and reconfigure the prop.. The manual's pretty good, we followed it to the letter and everything worked out fine.

Nah it's not your explanation, it's my 3-d visualization skills. I only just remembered that if you flip a screw around, it still screws the same way. Man, even that statement feels ambiguous :P

Now that that's resolved, yes, your rule makes a lot of sense; I just needed to be able to picture the angle of the blade as it chops through the water.
