Yanmar engine mounts are a good thing

While having our Yanmar 2GM20F's drive shaft and related parts redone in ways that sucked the money from this year's budget, I had a chance to compare the Yanmar mounts to some quality third-party mounts from PYI.

The shop doing the work--who did an excellent, concientious job--installed the PYI mounts to make sure the nice new shaft and coupling ran as smoothly as possible, I believe, but I found the amount of vibration and noise transmitted to the boat, her parts, and her crew to be unacceptable, even if the shaft turned smoothly. So they agreed to replace the PYIs with Yanmars. I expected the obviously squishier Yanmars to help dampen some of the vibration at idle, but really the difference was huge--took me by surprise, partly because it has been a while since we had a smooth drive train. With the PYIs, companionway covers, locker covers buzzed, and I got a nice foot massage. With the Yanmars, we weren't sure the engine had started at first. At all engine speeds, in gear or not, way less vibration and noise.

I suppose there are advantages to the firmer PYI mounts, but life is too short to strap yourself to a 2-cylinder jackhammer.

Do you have some model numbers? and are they actually made by Yanmar? ust wondering cause I am in the process of replacing mine and doing a google search for yanmar engine mounts has brought me zilch.

Try Torresen Marine, here is a link to Yanmar Motor Mounts. Not a lot of info but just e-mail them and ask if they fit your model. Maybe there are all the same ?

I'm sure all Yanmar mounts are not the same. In fact for an engine like the 2GM20F, you use different models (just different firmness) for the front vs. the back.

BTW, I purchased my new mounts from Torresen Marine. Easy to call them up and ask about your engine.

I have a Albin AD-21, it is a old Swedish Diesel. I spoke with Torresen this morning, they have what I need with the exception they are on the east coast and I am in SoCal. I am trying to find them locally, if I can't soon, I will order from Torresen.
