the saildrive for the kubota/betamarine is made by technodrive in italy, the whole package (engine and saildrive) looks like a brilliant design, in fact i liked it so much i just installed one in my flying dutchman 37. i have not ran it yet because im waiting for a new prop. they do make adaptors for connecting it to your volvo engine. the only beef i have is like the volvo and unlike the yanmar you must remove the prop to replace the zincs. having said that i much prefer the beta to the yanmar, servicing is easier and the beta runs much quieter, not to mention the kubota has legendary reliability.

I use a Kubota (Beta) 722, which is a three Cylinder 20HP Engine.
Smooth running, lightwight, low emmisions (mine ist a 2005 TIER2, current type of that engine meets TIER4. Effectively, it "don`t smoke". And - not to forget, its all made of iron cast! (The heat exchanger/manifold is made of alu, what is OK) BTW, also Nanni Diesel uses those fabulous Kubotas.

best, Niels

If you are replacing the saildrive only check the gear ratio of the new unit. I had an MD11 Volvo that needed replacing. The saildrive had been completely rebuilt before I bought the boat so I wanted to keep the saildrive and save some $$. The MD 11 ran at 2500 rpm but the new motors (Beta's run at 3600 rpm Vovlos at 3200). Because of the gear ratio of the Volvo 110s I would have only been able to put a 12" prop on the boat. I replaced the whole thing with a VolvoD1-30 and 130s saildrive. BTW I sold my old saildrive and engine for $1000 so I guess I made out OK

Yes, that`s an important point. My SD110S has a ratio of 1.66:1, what was originally designed for engine RPMs at about 2500.
The Kubota is running at max 3600 w/ 14,9KW, but I managed it in the way that the prop is designed for engine revs of 3000 RPM. At that RPM, the Engine still has 12,4 KW, what is fairly enough for my small boat. According to that, I use a 14x6x2LH Volvo-Penta folding Prop. Works good.

Best regards,

Niels

Rockter will become famous soon enough
Damn it guys, when you start messing with gear ratios, be careful. Mistakes are permanent, and very expensive.

Re: Volvo 110 saildrive

Are you still looking for a saildrive? I might have a Yanmar 1GM w/saildrive and low hours complete for about $2500 if you wanted to replace the whole system.
Thanks,
Ted
