Volvo Penta 2002 18 hp. after 5 to 30 minutes

My Volvo Penta 2002 18 hp 2 cylinder diesel engine start easy, sounds and runs good from 5 to 30 minutes. It then stops like it is not getting fuel. It has new fuel, new filters and seperators that were topped off with fuel when they were installed. Any suggestions?

jtsail, welcome to Sailnet. When you get a chance an introduction post in the Introductions section might be nice.

You've probably got air getting in somewhere. Bleed the fuel system right through to the injectors and see if that makes a difference.

Some boats have a screen in the fuel tank pickup tube. Run the motor, the screen plugs up. Stop the motor, the fuel sloshing around in the tank partially washes off the screen, just enough so it will run for a bit until it plugs up again.

Perhaps the tank is not venting properly or a partially plugged pickup tube if it has a screen on it. All connections on the vacuum side of the pump should be checked, or perhaps the filter itself is sucking air somewhere?

if you get a jerrycan of diesel and stick a hose in it and plumb it to the fuel system to bypass your tank, and it runs, it would point to the tank or the fittings to the tank or the plugged vent line as dabnis mentioned (good call btw)
