yep, she fired. so now i have a 30 year old motor with 80 hrs on it that purrs. so all said and done, what i think is that the water and debris that was at the bottom of the gas can was preventing the clean gas from reaching the engine. I don't have a fuel / water separator from the tank to the lift pump, that might be part of the problem the previous owner had. /shrug. I'll add it to my list  . thanks b.

Thanks for the feedback. Not sure what your filter arrangement is but IIRC,
a Racor that I had many years ago was a filter and water separator combined in one unit, not sure of the exact model. Racor has a lot of choices:
MARINE FUEL FILTRATION - Parker
Perhaps your engine manufacturer can give you recommendations on filter(s)
